BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin's Hugh Fleming scored a late
first-half goal and Greg Frechette added a second-half tally to
give the Polar Bear men's soccer team a season-opening victory
against the University of Maine-Farmington on Saturday. Bowdoin
(1-0) will return to action Tuesday afternoon at home against
Gordon. Farmington dips to 1-1 and will play Wednesday at
Bates.
Bowdoin controlled the pace of play throughout, but couldn't find
the net until late in the opening stanza. Fleming took a pass from
Dominic Fitzpatrick and crafted a left-footed strike into the lower
right corner to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage just 1:05 before
intermission. Midway though the second period, Frechette took a
cross from Will Alden-Dunn and played it perfectly under the cross
bar to make it 2-0.
Dan Hicks was forced to make just one save as the Polar Bears held
a 23-1 edge in shots and 10-0 lead in corner kicks. Farmington's
Brian Lemont kept his team in the game, making 11 saves in defeat.
