BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin's Ellery Gould scored a pair of goals
while Amherst featured three different scorers in a 3-3 women's
soccer deadlock on Saturday afternoon. Just six games into the
season, Polar Bears (2-1-3, 0-1-2 NESCAC) matched a school record
with their third tie of the season. Amherst stands at 2-1-2 (2-0-1
NESCAC) this season.
Bowdoin jumped out to a two-goal lead in just 23 minutes on
Saturday, as Kit Hamley's perfect through-ball came to the foot of
Rebecca Silva, who netted it to give the Polar Bears the advantage
just 4:12 into the contest. Later in the frame, Ellery Gould took a
feed from Hamley, shook two defenders and buried a chance into the
corner of the net to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
Amherst wasted little time rebounding, however, and scored twice
in the final 18 minutes of the period to knot the game at halftime.
Kyla Woodhouse got the Jeffs on the board with a high shot from the
top of the box that was just beyond the reach of Bowdoin's Kelly
Thomas at 27:22. Less than 10 minutes later, Meg Murphy's corner
kick came to Jess Wall, who one-timed a header into the net to tie
the contest at 36:36.
The Jeffs took the lead early in the second stanza when Murphy
took control of a loose ball at the top of the box and tucked it
inside the post just 47 seconds into the half. Gould responded for
Bowdoin with under 14 minutes remaining when she booted home a ball
from just inside the box to force the extra session. Neither team
could find the back of the net in overtime as the game ended in a
3-3 tie.
Thomas finished with six saves for Bowdoin. Lili Ferguson played a
half for Amherst, making two saves in the opening period. Allie
Horwitz played the remainder in goal for Amherst and stopped two
shots.
