GORHAM, Maine - Senior Madeleine McQueeney and sophomore Jessie
Small each scored first-half goals to lead the top-ranked Bowdoin
College Polar Bears to a 2-0 win over the University of Southern
Maine Huskies in a non-conference field hockey game Tuesday
afternoon at Paula Hodgdon Field in Gorham, Maine.
Bowdoin, playing their only scheduled game on natural grass this
season, has not allowed a goal and remains undefeated at 7-0.
Southern Maine drops to 2-4 with the loss.
McQueeney struck first for the Polar Bears with an unassisted goal
in the 11th minute when she corralled a loose ball in the circle
for her third goal of the season. Small gave Bowdoin, the defending
NCAA Division III National Champions, a two-goal advantage in the
31st minute.
Southern Maine junior goalkeeper Allison Hill was strong in goal
for the Huskies making several close-range saves to keep the
Huskies in the contest. Hill turned back 18 shots as the Polar
Bears outshot USM 28-0. Sophomore back Heather Gilman played solid
defense for the Huskies making a pair of defensive saves. Bowdoin
senior goalkeeper Emileigh Mercer and sophomore Emily Nelson split
the shutout.
