WATERVILLE, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's rugby team
shutout Colby on Saturday in their NERFU opener, 34-0. The Polar
Bears are 4-1 overall this year.
The score was 22-0 at halftime with 4 tries and one conversion.
Scoring the first four tries were Maria Koenigs, co-captain Hannah
Wadsworth, scrumhalf Becky Stevens and Anna Nicol with one
conversion by Stevens. Second half tries were by Stevens and
co-captain Alivia Moore'09, with a 2nd conversion by Stevens.
Several players dominated their positions and the overall pace of
the match today: Erica Camarena led the forwards with very
disciplined and aggressive play. Loryn Fridie gave a strong
performance as an impact player both in the scrum and the backline
and Nylea Bivins was impressive in her first full game at prop.
Maria Koenigs, Alivia Moore and Becky Stevens led the backline with
well-executed offensive moves and hard-nosed defensive stops. Colby
was forced to the kicking game, which the entire Bowdoin team
stepped up to handle.
The B-team consisted of all first-year rookies who saw their hard
work at training sessions pay off in the match. Bowdoin dominated
with a fine show of teamwork and athleticism, winning 24-0. Scoring
the first tries of their rugby careers were Onyi Esonu, Danielle
Willey and Taylor Escajeda. Onyi scored a 2nd try and Escajeda
added 2 conversion kicks.
