MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Bowdoin College field hockey team
dominated, but survived a scare from Wesleyan University on
Saturday, 1-0. Lindsay McNamara scored the game-winning goal with
just 13 seconds remaining to lift the top-ranked Polar Bears (4-0)
to their 24th consecutive victory. Wesleyan falls to 0-2 with the
loss.
Bowdoin completely dominated play with a 36-0 advantage in shots
and a 25-0 edge in penalty corners. Only the tremendous play of
Wesleyan junior goalie Breen McDonald, who posted 18 saves, and
four defensive saves by Wesleyan, three coming from junior Alexa
David, kept Bowdoin at bay for more than 69 minutes. But shortly
after Bowdoin's 25th corner and Wesleyan's inability to clear the
ball, Kate Gormley sent a pass from left to right to McNamara who
drove from 12 yards out and ripped her 11th goal of the season past
McDonald.
Senior goalie Emileigh Mercer and sophomore goalie Emily Neilson
each handled the Bowdoin goal for a half without needing to make a
save.
