BOX SCORE
CASTLETON, Vt. - The Bowdoin College men's ice hockey team
remained unbeaten with a 5-3 victory at Castleton State on Friday
evening. The 14th-ranked Polar Bears improve to 5-0-1 this year
while Castleton falls to 1-4-0.
Bowdoin scored a trio of first-period goals to take an early
advantage. Owen Smith's first goal of the year at 12:45 gave the
visitors the lead before Ryan Blossom and Matt Smith scored just 23
seconds apart later in the frame to push the lead to 3-0 at the
first intermission.
Castleton stormed out of the gates in the second period,
outshooting Bowdoin 12-5 and tying the game with three consecutive
scores. Eric Curtis, Nick Wescott and Marlin Froese scored in the
first 10:22 of the frame to deadlock the score at three apiece.
The tie was short-lived, however, as Bowdoin rookie Graham
Sisson notched a powerplay goal 44 seconds later to give the Polar
Bears a 4-3 lead at the end of two periods. The Polar Bear defense
made the lead stand, with goaltender Richard Nerland stopping all
10 shots he faced in the third period. Blossom added an
empty-netter to seal the victory.
Nerland stopped 24 shots in the win for the Polar Bears. Jeff
Swanson (seven saves, three goals) with Jay Seals (12 saves, two
goals) split time for Castleton State.
