SALEM, Mass. - The Salem State men's ice hockey team won the
2008 Holiday Classic with a 4-3 overtime win against Bowdoin on
Sunday. The win snaps the Polar Bears' four-year stranglehold on
the title and drops the squad to 6-2-1 overall this year. Salem
improves to 5-4-0.
The teams were tied 1-1 after 20 minutes of action after first
period goals by Bowdoin's Aaron O'Callahan and Salem's Aaron
Blades. Second period lamplighters were provided by Tournament MVP
Jeff Tellier and Bowdoin's Graham Sisson, who knotted the score at
2-2 entering the final 20 minutes of regulation play.
Kyle Hanson appeared to score the game-winning goal when Kyle
Hanson notched an unassisted tally with 7:06 remaining. But Salem's
Colin Young provided the late-game heroics, scoring with just four
ticks remaining to force overtime. In the extra session, Tellier's
second goal of the night at 2:27 clinched the victory.
Richard Nerland (51:47, 3 GA, 17 saves) and Nick Smith (10:40, 1
GA, five saves) split time in net for Bowdoin. Ryan Hatch stopped
46 shots for Salem, who were out-shot 49-26 by the Polar Bears.
