BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin's Leah Rubega scored 18 points and
grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds to lead the Polar Bear women's
basketball team to a 56-49 win over Salve Regina. The Polar Bears
improve to 3-1 this season while the Seahawks fall to 3-3 overall.
Both teams struggled from the field in the opening stanza, with
the squads combining to connect on just 34% of their shots from the
field. The Polar Bears carried a 25-20 edge into the break thanks
to six points apiece from Rubega and Katie Bergeron.
The squads traded buckets to open the second period before a
13-5 surge by Salve gave the visitors their first lead of the
contest. A pair of free-throws from Jessi Barowski gave the
Seahawks a 37-36 lead with 12:30 to play. Bowdoin responded
quickly, as a Katie Bergeron jumper regained the lead for the Polar
Bears on the next possession. Despite not extending their lead to
more than six points for the remainder of the game, Bowdoin would
never relinquish the lead. Their seven-point advantage at the
buzzer equaled their largest lead of the game.
That was, in great part, thanks to Rubega's work on the boards.
The junior's 18 caroms were the 8th-highest single-game total in
school history, and the most by a Polar Bear since Andrea Little
had 19 against Hamilton in 1998. Ten of the rebounds came on the
offensive glass. Overall, Bowdoin held an impressive 47-28
advantage in rebounding.
Katie Bergeron added 17 for the Polar Bears, including several
driving layups. Erin Phillips led Salve Regina with 15 points and
eight rebounds while Allegra Lovoy had 13 points, four assists and
seven steals for the Seahawks.
Prior to Sunday's game, Bowdoin honored senior Jill Anelauskas,
who reached the 1,000-point milestone in the Polar Bears'
season-opening victory against Western Connecticut. She is just the
11th player in program history to reach the mark. (Left-to-right:
senior captains Alexa Kaubris, Maria Noucas and Jill Anelauskas
