WALTHAM, Mass. - Bowdoin's Jill Anelauskas became the 11th
player in school history to reach the 1,000-point plateau as she
netted a game-high 18 points to lead the Polar Bear women's
basketball team to a season-opening win against Western Connecticut
on Saturday, 75-45. Bowdoin advances to the final of the Brandeis
Tip-Off Tournament, where they will play the host Judges on Sunday
in the final at 3:00 p.m. Bowdoin (1-0) is ranked 15th in the
D3Hoops.com preseason poll.
Bowdoin wasted little time putting Saturday's game out of reach,
jumping out to a 14-2 lead and never trailing. The Polar Bears
extended their lead to 25 points at the break (46-19) and led by as
many as 37 points in the second half. Anelauskas' 1,000 points came
on a bucket with 15:21 remaining in the second half.
Eleven different players scored for Bowdoin in the win, led by
Anelauskas' 18. Katie Bergeron finished with 13 points, including a
trio of three-pointers, while Sabrina Cote had nine. Leah Rubega
led the Polar Bears on the boards, collecting 11 caroms.
The Polar Bears were outstanding defensively, holding Western
Conn. to just 38% from the field and forcing 25 turnovers. Bowdoin
held a 41-21 edge on the glass and had 19 steals in the game.
