Gould's Two Goals the Difference in Win Over Bates

BOX SCORE

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's soccer team got a pair of second-half goals from first-year Ellery Gould to deal Bates their fourth consecutive loss with a 2-0 decision on Wednesday. The Polar Bears improve to 3-1-3 (1-1-2 NESCAC) while the Bobcats fall to 1-5-0 (0-4-0 NESCAC) this year.

Bates came out of the gates firing and had the best early scoring chance as Sam Alper broke loose behind the Bowdoin defense and fired a shot that sailed wide of net just minutes into the opening half. The Polar Bears tightened up their defense following the close call and controlled the pace of play for the remainder of the half, holding a 10-4 edge in shots after the opening minutes and a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. Bowdoin couldn't find the back of the net, however, as the game entered the second half in a scoreless tie.

The skies opened up in the second period, as the teams played in a downpour for most of the stanza. Just over 20 minutes in, Bowdoin broke through when Christina Aceto fed Gould, who ripped a bullet from 18 yards that tucked just under the crossbar. Gould doubled Bowdoin's lead with her team-leading fifth goal of the season with under five minutes to play, as she controlled a loose ball and lofted a long shot from the left side that slipped inside the far post.

Kelly Thomas stopped five shots in her third shutout of the season for Bowdoin. Brittney French made eight saves in defeat for Bates.
