BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin College rookie pitcher Julia Jacobs
(Ridgewood, N.J.) has been named the New England Small College
Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week. The first-year enjoyed an
outstanding string of games, earning four victories last week as
the Polar Bears went 6-1.
Jacobs toosed three complete-game victories last week against
in-state rivals Maine-Farmington, Colby and Bates. She also earned
a victory in relief in Bowdoin's dramatic come-from-behind win over
Bates in the nightcap of a doubleheader Saturday. For the week, she
pitched 23 innings, striking out 21 batters while allowing just 16
hits. She posted a 1.96 earned-run-average and held opponents to
just a .193 batting average.
The newcomer is having a stellar first season at Bowdoin. Both
Jacobs and teammate Karen Reni have tied the school record for
single-season wins by a pitcher (12), while the team (24-14) is
just one win shy of tying the school record for victories in a
season. Jacobs has posted a 2.38 ERA this season and has whiffed
more batters (109) than allowed hits (100) on the year.
