Tim Ryan was named Ashmead White Director of Athletics on March 5, 2013.

A member of the Class of 1998, Ryan began his career in investment and commercial banking. In 2005, the Wells, Maine native changed his career focus and decided to pursue his passion for education and athletics. He returned to Bowdoin in the summer of 2005 as an assistant football coach, and in 2007, he was named associate athletic director for operations.

In that role, Ryan managed the department budget, supervised staff, served on numerous College committees, and represented the department on several capital and major maintenance projects. He also worked closely and effectively with a variety of College departments, including Admissions, Development and Alumni Relations, Facilities Management, IT, Human Resources, and Communications and Public Affairs. He assumed the interim Director of Athletics role in the summer of 2012 before being named Director following a national search.

As director of athletics, Ryan oversees 31 intercollegiate varsity sports, two club sports, and general fitness programming at the College. Ryan is a member of the Executive Committee of the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA), a charter member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference Medical Aspects in Sports Committee, serves as Treasurer for the Howard Vandersea Maine Chapter of the National Football Foundation, and is a member of the Cumberland County Police Athletic League Scholarship Fund Board of Directors.

As a student at Bowdoin, Ryan was a Dean’s List student, a tri-captain of the 1997 football team, and a member of the Residential Life staff. Ryan earned his master’s degree in higher education administration at Drexel University in 2011 and completed the Cornell University Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Building a Diverse Workforce certificate program in 2023. He resides in Brunswick with his wife Jennifer.
