In the fall of 2014, David Caputi will enter his 15th season asthe head coach of the Bowdoin football team. Hired in the spring of2000 as the 28th coach in the storied history of the program,Caputi has led an effort that has seen the Polar Bears become oneof the most competitive teams in the New England Small CollegeAthletic Conference, maintaining the C-B-B (Colby-Bates-Bowdoin)Championship trophy for six consecutive seasons between 2006-11,the longest stretch in school history.
Entering the 2014 season, Caputi had the fourth-most wins of anycoach in Bowdoin football history.
In 2005, Bowdoin earned a third-place finish in the NESCAC withvictories over Amherst, Middlebury, Tufts, Hamilton, Wesleyan andBates. A program-best four Polar Bears earned All-Conferenceselections that season, and over 40 players have collectedAll-NESCAC honors under Caputi, including the 2013 NESCAC DefensivePlayer of the Year. In addition, dozens of Caputi's players havebeen recognized as Academic All-NESCAC, by the National Strengthand Conditioning Association, the National Football Foundation andthe Gridiron Club of Greater Boston.
Caputi joined the Bowdoin athletic staff after serving as theoffensive coordinator for Williams College -- a fellow member ofthe New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). In his13 years at Williams, the Ephs compiled a 88-13-3 record with fourundefeated seasons. Before joining Williams, Caputi served as thequarterbacks and secondary coach for Tufts University from 1985 to1986. In his two seasons at Tufts, the football team transformedfrom an 0-7-1 squad the year before he arrived to 7-1 in his secondseason. In 1986, the Jumbos were voted the top-ranked Division IIIfootball team in New England.
After a year of assistant coaching for Fitchburg (Mass.) HighSchool, Caputi earned his first collegiate coaching experience atAmherst College as a receivers coach and scouting coordinator in1982. After a brief stint in the business world in 1983-84, Caputireturned to coaching -- again with Amherst -- as an offensivebackfield and receivers coach, helping the Lord Jeffs notch aperfect 8-0 season in 1984.
Caputi graduated from Middlebury College in 1981 with a Bachelorof Arts in American history. On the gridiron, he was the startingquarterback for a Panthers squad that finished the 1980 season witha 6-1-1 record. In 1994, Caputi received his Master's Degree inEducation from North Adams State (Mass.) College.
Caputi is married to Elizabeth Connolly Caputi and they have fourchildren -- David, Marguerite, Lydia and Claire.
