Brad Burnham

Brad Burnham has served as head coach of the Bowdoin men’s and women’s swimming & diving programs since 2000, directing the Polar Bears to sustained success in one of the nation’s most competitive Division III conferences. During his tenure, Bowdoin swimmers have earned numerous All-America honors and rewritten virtually every school record. Over the course of his coaching career, including at Bowdoin, Burnham has coached numerous Olympians and national champion swimmers.

At Bowdoin

  • Head Coach of Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving since 2000; just the third head coach in the history of the men’s program and second in the history of the women’s program.
  • Coached numerous All-Americans and NESCAC champions during his tenure.
  • Has overseen the rewriting of virtually every Bowdoin swimming record.
  • Named NESCAC Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year in 2015.
  • Consistently guided both programs to strong finishes at the NESCAC Championships.
  • Coached Olympic swimmers Emilie and Alex Grand'Pierre, and Division III champion Natalie Garre. 

Coaching Resume

  • 2000–present: Head Coach, Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving — Bowdoin College.
  • Previously spent six seasons as an assistant coach at UCLA, where the Bruins finished no lower than 16th nationally at the NCAA Division I Championships during his tenure.
  • Served as a graduate assistant coach at Colorado State University while completing his master’s degree.

Education & Certifications

  • University of Maine, 1992 — B.S. in Physical Education and Health Fitness.
  • Colorado State University — Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology.
  • Served as a graduate teaching assistant in Exercise Physiology while at Colorado State.

Athletic Career

  • Member of the swimming team at the University of Maine.
  • Served as captain of the Black Bears during his senior season, member of Dean’s List.
