Liz Grote has served as head coach of the Bowdoin women’s lacrosse program since 2003, becoming the winningest coach in program history while establishing the Polar Bears as a consistent contender in one of Division III’s strongest conferences. Grote has led Bowdoin to six NCAA Tournament appearances, highlighted by the program’s historic run to the 2011 NCAA Division III National Championship game, and has earned IWLCA regional Coach of the Year honors four times.

At Bowdoin

  • Head coach of the Bowdoin women’s lacrosse program since 2003
  • Also serves as Bowdoin’s NCAA Compliance Coordinator
  • Owns 232 career victories at Bowdoin and became the winningest coach in program history in 2011
  • Led the Polar Bears to three NESCAC Championship game appearances
  • Guided Bowdoin to six NCAA Division III Tournament appearances
  • Led the 2011 team to a program-record 18 victories, its first NCAA Final Four and a national runner-up finish
  • In her time at Bowdoin has coached 28 IWLCA All-Americans and 57 All-NESCAC honorees through 2026 season.

  • Elected President of the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) in 2020 after previously serving the organization in several leadership roles

  • 1994 graduate of the University of Vermont
  • Earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education

Athletic Career

  • Played collegiate lacrosse at the University of Vermont
  • Four-year letterwinner for the Catamounts
  • Served as a team captain during her senior season
  • Began her coaching career shortly after completing her collegiate playing career, eventually making stops at Monmouth, Princeton and New Hampshire before becoming a head coach.
