Men's Lacrosse Dismisses Scranton in NCAA Opener

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College men's lacrosse team used a stifling defensive effort in a 16-6 win over Scranton in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament Saturday at Whittier Field. The Polar Bears improve to 17-1 while the Royals end their year with a mark of 14-7.
 
The Polar Bears advance to the Third Round of the tournament on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. against the winner of Amherst and Stevens.
 
Game Highlights
  • The Royals came out firing, taking an early 2-1 lead after seven minutes of play.
  • Bowdoin found its footing with a Cormac Walsh goal late in the first quarter, scoring four times in the final 2:38 to take a 5-2 lead on a Brooks Kitchel goal just before the break.
  • The run sparked a 9-0 surge for the Polar Bears, who led 11-3 at intermission.
  • The Polar Bears rode their defense in the second half, as Bowdoin permitted just two goals over a span of 49:46 from the first until late in the fourth period.
By The Numbers
  • The Polar Bears used a balanced attack, as 13 players scored goals, paced by two apiece from Sam Raye-Steiner, Hudson Greene, and Casey Ryan.
  • Chris Berry sparked the offense with five assists in addition to a goal.
  • Phoenix Kelly-Zuckerman won nine of 12 faceoffs in the victory, leading the Bowdoin faceoff group.
  • Defensively, Alec Delgado was fantastic – making 14 saves and allowing four goals in 57:11. Alex Byrne had three caused turnovers and four ground balls the lead the Polar Bear defense.
