Baseball Loses Opener of NESCAC East Series to Bates

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bates College baseball team took the first of a three-game set with Bowdoin at Pickard Field on Friday afternoon, 5-3. The Bobcats move to 13-3 (2-2 NESCAC) while the Polar Bears fall to 9-9 (2-2 NESCAC).
 
Game Highlights
  • Bates took the early lead on a first inning single but Bowdoin rebounded in the bottom of the frame as Will Cooke delivered a two-run double that gave the hosts a 2-1 edge.
  • The Bobcats evened the score on a David Swift single in the third and took the lead on a bunt by Keagan Ryan in the fourth frame, 3-2.
  • Bates extended its lead to 4-2 in the seventh but a Reuben Siegel solo blast to right field cut the lead to 4-3 heading into the eight.
  • The Bobcats answered with a key insurance run, though, and the Polar Bears went 1-2-3 in the ninth to finish the game.
By The Numbers
  • John Tully (5-1) got the win for Bates, going 6.0 innings and allowing two earned runs, while Ezra Pate picked up the save by closing out the final three frames, permitting just the solo homer to Siegel.
  • Sam Almy (0-5) took the loss for Bowdoin, allowing two earned runs in four innings.
  • Will Cooke led the Bowdoin bats with a 2-3 performance that included two RBI and a HBP.
