BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin softball team picked up a series split with visiting Amherst on Sunday afternoon.
The Polar Bears 16-3 (2-2 NESCAC) allowed the Mammoths (7-7, 2-2 NESCAC) to rally late in game one to take a 9-7 win. Bowdoin rebounded with a 10-2 five-inning win in game two.
Game One Highlights
- Bowdoin scored a run in both the first and second innings off Maddie Paschke and Penelope Fong-Picariello.
- Amherst tied the game in the third.
- The Polar Bears stretched the lead again in the fourth and fifth. Fong-Picariello plated a pair with a single to center. Margret Flannery-Goodman also drove in two runs with a single to center.
- Kaitlyn Fado hit an RBI double in the fifth to make it 7-2.
- Amherst mounted a seven run rally in the top of sixth, sparked by a two-run homer to left field by Laura Daniels.
- Maddie Current went 5.2 innings and allowed 13 hits with four strikeouts.
- Sophia Hahn pitched the remainder of the game and allowed two hits.
- Anika Ewert and Elise Siciliano both went 2-for-3. Paschke hit 3-for-4.
Game Two Highlights
- Bowdoin got the game started with Paschke drawing a bases-loaded walk in the first.
- Ewert recorded and RBI single in the second and Fong-Picariello did the same. Later, Fong-Picariello drew the throw to second with a stolen base and Ewert scored from third. Fong-Picariello later scored on a wild pitch. Flannery-Goodman also scored from third on a passed ball.
- The only Amherst runs came in the top of the third with a two-run homer over the left field fence by Abby Moravek.
- Bowdoin's Bailey Wong scored in the bottom half of the inning on a passed ball and Ewert had an RBI groundout.
- Ewert hit a walk-off in the park homerun in the bottom of the fifth to lift Bowdoin to a 10-2 win.
- Kathleen Hester pitched all five innings and allowed four hits with five strikeouts.
- Ewert and Wong both had a pair of hits.
