Nuernberg's Second Half Goal Lifts Men's Soccer to Road Win at Bates

LEWISTON, Maine – Lucas Nuernberg scored early in the second half and goalkeeper Oliver King delivered several outstanding saves down the stretch as the Bowdoin College men's soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Bates on Wednesday evening.
 
The Polar Bears improve to 5-1-3 overall (3-1-1 NESCAC) with the victory, while the Bobcats fall to 4-4-1 (1-3-1 NESCAC).
 
Game Highlights
  • After a scoreless opening half, Bowdoin broke through just over four minutes into the second period. The goal came following a sustained stretch of pressure by the Polar Bears, who worked the ball into the penalty area, where Patrick Brady provided a touch to Lucas Nuernberg, who finished the opportunity at 49:17 for his second career goal.
  • Bates responded by pressing forward in search of the equalizer, putting Bowdoin's defense under considerable pressure throughout the second half.
  • King rose to the occasion, making several excellent saves in the closing stages to preserve the narrow advantage. The Polar Bear goalkeeper finished with four stops, including three in the second half, to secure the shutout.
  • Bowdoin generated 15 shots in the contest, including eight on goal, while Bates finished with 16 attempts. The Polar Bears held an 8-5 advantage in shots during the opening half before the Bobcats turned up the pressure after intermission.

  • The shutout was Bowdoin's fourth of the season, including three in NESCAC play.
  • Nuernberg's game-winner was his first goal of the season and second of his career, while Brady collected his second assist.
  • Bowdoin held an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal, with Bates goalkeeper Isaac Kolaczkowski making seven saves.
  • The teams finished even with five corner kicks apiece.
