CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Bowdoin College volleyball team rattled off wins in the second and third set to go ahead 2-1 entering the fourth set but ultimately fell in five sets to No. 9 nationally-ranked MIT on Friday evening. The Polar Bears (8-5, 2-1 NESCAC) forced the Engineers (11-1, 2-0 NEWMAC) into just their second fifth set of the season and narrowly fell on the road in a close affair with set scores of 25-19, 25-22, 25-17, 25-18 and 16-14.

The Polar Bears put together complete sets in the second and third set to put them ahead 2-1 with Bowdoin taking the second set convincingly after the 5-4 mark before a scoring streak of nine points earned them a 25-17 third set victory.

The Engineers answered with momentum in the fourth set, leading early at 4-0 before building multiple leads of five or more to cruise to a 25-18 decision and force the first fifth set for the home team since their season opener.

The fifth set proved to be just as thrilling as the first four, showcasing three lead changes and nine ties. MIT went on a 5-0 run to claim a 9-4 edge before the Polar Bears answered with five points before the two teams jostled near match point before the Engineers rattled off three points to close out the contest 16-14.
