Volleyball Upends No. 7 Wesleyan to Complete Weekend Sweep

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin volleyball team completed a NESCAC weekend sweep on Saturday defeating No. 7 nationally-ranked Wesleyan in four sets inside the Morrell Gymnasium. The Polar Bears move up to 10-6 overall (4-2 NESCAC) as the Cardinals fall to 12-2 overall and drop their second conference contest of the weekend, now at 5-2 in the league.

Game Highlights

  • The Polar Bears fell in the opening set 25-20 before taking the next three sets with a 25-23 second set, 25-16 in the third set and a decisive 25-12 fourth set for the win. 

  • Wesleyan went ahead by five at 19-14 in the second set before rattling eight unanswered points leading to the eventual 25-23 nod.

  • The home team got better as the game went on scoring nine of 10 points midway through the third set to pull ahead 18-11 with six kills by Zoe Ryu in the set helping Bowdoin to a momentum swinging 25-16 victory.

  • The Polar Bears were outstanding in the close-out set, once again seeing an early lead, securing 12 of the first 14 points, ultimately leading by 13 points five times throughout the set before deciding the game

By The Numbers

  • Zoe Ryu recorded a season-high 17 kills in the match while Skye LaMendola and Alison Smith added nine, respectively.

  • Cameron Shelly (15) and Molly Dunn (13) paced the offense finishing with double-figure assists.

  • Anna Yeh recorded a game-high 16 digs, with LaMendola close behind with 14.

  • The Polar Bears dominant fourth set, marked the lowest scoring set for the Cardinals on the season.
