LAST WEEK
Bowdoin outgained Middlebury 314-277 but could not convert its offensive opportunities into points in a
16-0 setback at Whittier Field. The Polar Bears trailed just 3-0 at halftime before a pair of third-quarter touchdowns gave the Panthers breathing room.
Soren Hummel threw for 232 yards,
Jude Baker caught five passes for 74 yards, and
Sean Ramos rushed for 63 yards.
Steven Vargo and
AJ Muse each recorded an interception for the Bowdoin defense.
Amherst broke a 14-14 halftime tie with two third-quarter touchdowns and pulled away for a
38-21 victory at Hamilton. Marek Hill threw for 306 yards and four touchdowns to four different receivers, while Christian Moore finished with eight catches for 120 yards. The Mammoths amassed 462 yards of total offense and held the ball for more than 36 minutes.
BY THE NUMBERS
Bowdoin's defense continues to rank among the NESCAC's best through two weeks. The Polar Bears stand fourth in both scoring defense (16.5 points per game) and total defense (277.5 yards per game). Amherst sits just behind Bowdoin in total defense at 278.0 yards per game and ranks third against the run, allowing only 40.5 yards per contest.
The Mammoths enter Saturday ranked third in the conference in both scoring offense (31.0 points per game) and total offense (355.0 yards per game). Bowdoin averages 258.0 yards of offense, including 211.0 through the air.
Charlie Saurack ranks third in the NESCAC with 17 tackles, while
Angus Leary leads the conference with six tackles for loss and is tied for second with two sacks. Vargo has recorded an interception in each of Bowdoin's first two games.
LAST MEETING
Amherst used a strong fourth quarter to claim a
34-7 win at Whittier Field last October. The Mammoths led 13-7 entering the final period before scoring 21 unanswered points to pull away.
BOWDOIN vs. AMHERST – ALL-TIME
The longtime rivals have played in every non-war and non-pandemic season since 1940.
Bowdoin won 35-7 in its most recent visit to Amherst in 2024 before the Mammoths answered with last fall's victory in Brunswick. The consecutive lopsided final scores were a bit of an anomoly, as the previous three meetings were all one-score decisions. Amherst holds an 81-20-2 advantage in the series entering Saturday.
