WATERVILLE, Maine – The Bowdoin field hockey team picked up its second win of the season and first conference win of the year in a 3-2 victory at Colby on Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears are 2-0 (1-0 NESCAC), while the Mules remain winless at 0-1 (0-1 NESCAC).
Game Highlights
- The Polar Bears struck early as Hannah Balmelli notched her fourth goal of the season at 5:21 in the first. Bowdoin earned a corner and Maddie Mrva put a shot on pads. Balmelli stepped in and collected the rebound, burying the ball with a lift past the goalie's blocker.
- Colby found an equalizer with five minutes remaining in the third quarter. Lauren O'Donald stopped the initial shot on the Mules' corner, but Christina Sweeney pounced on the uncleared ball and pushed it in to make it 1-1.
- Bowdoin came out and retook the lead 1:57 into the final frame. A perfectly executed corner ended with Mrva sweeping the ball toward the right post and Emily Ferguson deflecting it in for the 2-1 edge.
- Ferguson gave Bowdoin a little breathing room with a successful penalty stroke five minutes later.
- The Mules stayed tight with an answering goal three minutes later to turn it back into a one-score game. The play started with a shot from the top-right side of the circle before a pair of deflections put the ball away on the far post.
By the Numbers
- O'Donald ended the day with nine saves and the win.
- Ginna Jacoby played three quarters and made nine saves. Opal O'Rourke made two saves in the final frame.
- Bowdoin earned 14 corners and allowed 12.
