BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Williams College baseball team stunned Bowdoin with an 11-run sixth inning, rallying from a 7-0 deficit to defeat the Polar Bears 16-9 in game two of their quarterfinal series on Sunday at Pickard Field.
The Ephs (20-13) advance to the NESCAC Championship next weekend in Brunswick, with match-ups for the double-elimination tournament to be determined. Bowdoin (24-11) ends their season with the most fourth-most wins in a single year in program history (24) and the most in a year since 2012.
Game Highlights
- After Saturday's game one loss, Bowdoin seemed poised to force a decisive game three when they built a seven-run lead by the fifth inning on Sunday.
- A Kevin Murray double sparked a two-run first frame, and another Murray double keyed a four-run rally in the fourth inning as Bowdoin led 6-0 after four innings.
- Bowdoin added another run in the bottom of the fifth before Williams answered with its decisive sixth-inning rally.
- Polar Bear pitching struggled in the frame, as a bases-loaded error opened the scoring for the Ephs. A sacrifice fly, followed by four bases loaded walks and a hit-by-pitch tied the game at 7-7.
- The decisive blow was a grand slam by Ryan Nakajima that capped the inning, giving Williams an 11-7 advantage.
- Liam Foley got two back for Bowdoin on a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth, but Williams tacked on five more runs in the closing innings to clinch the victory.
