CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Bowdoin College women's tennis team battled hard, but couldn't overcome Emory in a 4-1 setback in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Tuesday afternoon in California. The Polar Bears finish their historic campaign with a record of 17-5, reaching the final eight of nationals and totaling the second-most wins in program history.
Match Highlights
- After losing at #1 doubles, the duo of Cara Hung/Suzanne Pogorelec claimed a 6-1 win at #3 doubles, setting the stage for a decider on court two.
- Izzy Antanavicius/Iris Berman of Emory got a service break and were able to take a late win over Bowdoin's Bella Hartung/Zoe Sun to give Emory the doubles point and a 1-0 overall lead.
- Each team won three first sets in singles play, but the Eagles closed out matches at #3 and #4 to take a 3-0 overall edge.
- Zoe Sun cut into the lead for the Polar Bears with a straight-set 6-4, 6-4 win at #6.
- The three remaining matches all entered a third set and were tightly played until late, when Emily Kantrovitz of Emory completed a comeback to tip Cara Hung at #1 (6-7, 6-2, 6-2) to send her team to the semifinals.
- Bella Hartung and Caroline Stufhlfaut were in closely-played third sets when the clincher occurred.
