Men's Lacrosse Swamps Rivier in NCAA Tournament Opener

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College men's lacrosse team dominated from start to finish of an NCAA Division III Second Round win over Rivier on Saturday afternoon at Whittier Field, 28-3. The Polar Bears scored a season-high in goals in the torrential rain to improve to 14-3 while Rivier ends its season with a record of 17-2.
 
Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin's first two goals came five seconds apart as Sam Raye-Steiner scored just one minute in, and face-off specialist Cam Wietfeldt put home a goal just moments later to give the Polar Bears a 2-0 edge.
  • Rivier closed to within 2-1 on a goal at 13:12 of the opening quarter but Bowdoin's defense took over from there, holding the Raiders scoreless for the next 52 minutes of game time as the offense poured it on.
  • Patrick Fitzgerald exploded for five first half goals while Raye-Steiner added three, extending Bowdoin's lead to 14-1 at the break.
  • The Polar Bears continued to roll in the second half, stretching their lead to as many as 26 goals in the fourth quarter.
By The Numbers
  • Patrick Fitzgerald scored seven goals, increasing his season total to 72, breaking the school's single-season record of 69 formerly held by Judd Newkirk (1995).
  • Rivier owned the second-ranked statistical defense in Division III entering the contest (6.61 goals/game), but Bowdoin's 28 goals were the second-most in school history in a single game.
  • Sam Raye-Steiner finished with a hat trick while Hudson Greene added three goals as well.
  • Chris Berry ended with two goals and three assists while Casey Ryan had two goals and two helpers.
  • Bowdoin dominated the faceoff dot thanks to performances from Cam Wietfeldt (9-12), Alex Choi (8-12), and Beau Burns (9-11).
  • Defensively Brooks Kitchel had three caused turnovers while Alex Byrne added two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Robert Hobbs made three saves, allowing one goal, in 35:15 before Alec Delgado made four saves, allowing two goals, over the final 24:45.

  • Bowdoin will face NESCAC foe Amherst in the Third Round of the tournament on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at Whittier Field. Amherst (11-5) survived Endicott, 12-11, in a second round game on Saturday afternoon. The Mammoths claimed the regular season meeting between the squads, 12-8, on March 23.
