BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team used a dominant defensive effort to hold off Amherst in a 58-49 win on Saturday in the NESCAC Semifinals in Morrell Gymnasium. With the win, the Polar Bears will earn the right to defend their conference title on Sunday at noon against Colby in the championship game.
The Polar Bears improve to 26-0 on the year while Amherst falls to 19-7.
Game Highlights
- In a contest that was a defensive battle throughout, the Mammoths used a balanced scoring attack to take a slim 15-14 lead after one period.
- Bowdoin regained the lead in the second quarter as Sydney Jones scored 12 points in the frame, outscoring Amherst by herself, to give the hosts a 28-24 lead at the break.
- The Polar Bears dominated the first eight minutes of the third quarter, outscoring the Mammoths 14-2, with Jones scoring seven in the run, as Bowdoin pushed their edge to as many as 16 points late in the period.
- Amherst was able to close the gap with a quick flurry to end the frame, trimming Bowdoin's lead to 44-35 heading into the fourth.
- The Mammoths were able to get as close as six points in the final frame with under seven minutes to play, but a clutch Carly Davey three-pointer with 6:30 to go pushed the lead back to nine points and Bowdoin went 11-14 from the free throw line down the stretch to seal the win.

- Bowdoin's defense held Amherst under 50 points for the first time since December as the Polar Bears forced the Mammoths into 31% shooting from the field, including 2-21 from three-point range.
- Sydney Jones was outstanding, finishing with 24 points to lead all scorers on the day.
- Abbie Quinn scored nine points with six boards while Callie Godfrey led Bowdoin with nine rebounds.
- The Polar Bears owned a 41-29 edge in rebounding and scored 11 second chance points in the victory.
- The win improves Bowdoin to 6-5 all-time in NESCAC Tournament play against Amherst.
