Women's Basketball Runs Away From Williams, Clinches Top Seed in NESCAC

BRUNSWICK, Maine – For the second straight season, the Bowdoin College women's basketball team will be the top seed for the NESCAC Championship Tournament. The Polar Bears, ranked fourth in the latest Division III poll, defeated Williams 80-56 on Saturday to improve to 22-0 (8-0 NESCAC) and clinch first place in the conference's regular season standings.

Bowdoin will close out their regular season at Wesleyan and Trinity next weekend and will host a NESCAC quarterfinal on Saturday, February 22. The complete tournament field will be announced following the conclusion of league play next weekend.

Game Highlights
  • The teams traded buckets in the early going before Bowdoin got hot, turning an early 6-4 lead into a 24-10 advantage in a span of seven minutes thanks to  13 first quarter points from Sydney Jones.
  • Williams tried chipping away at the Bowdoin lead in the second quarter, trimming the advantage to seven points on one occasion, but a 6-1 run to end the frame, capped by a Maria Belardi layup, gave Bowdoin a 43-31 lead at the break.
  • Abbie Quinn was perfect from the field (3-3) in the third quarter as Bowdoin pulled away for good, pushing the lead past 20 points.
  • Bowdoin coasted the rest of the way, leading by as many as 28 points as the Polar Bears dealt the Ephs their worst margin of defeat on the season.
By The Numbers
  • Bowdoin shot 47% from the field in the win, thanks in great part to 52 points in the paint in the contest.
