Men's Hoops Closes Out UAA Challenge With Win Over Rochester

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College men's basketball team survived a late comeback to earn a win on day two of the UAA-NESCAC Men's Basketball Challenge Sunday, 72-70, over Rochester. The Polar Bears improve to 6-3 while the Yellowjackets drop to 7-2.
 
Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin shot 46% in the opening half and locked down the Yellowjackets (23%) as Mason Dawkins scored ten points in the stanza to give the hosts a 31-23 lead at the break.
  • Rochester stormed back early in the second half, opening the period on a 10-2 surge to tie the game at 33 with 16:57 remaining.
  • The Yellowjackets took the lead a few minutes later, and led by as many as four points midway through the half, but Bowdoin rallied to deadlock the score again at 45 apiece with 10 minutes to go.
  • A layup by Ray Cuevas and dunk by Kevin Reeves gave Bowdoin a 50-45 cushion and the lead they would never relinquish.
  • A 12-4 run, capped by a three-pointer from Alex Halpern, gave the Polar Bears a commanding 67-57 edge with 3:48 on the clock.
  • Rochester made a late push, outscoring Bowdoin 13-5 over the final three minutes, but the Polar Bears connected on three late free throws to seal the victory.
By The Numbers
  • Bowdoin finished a 46% from the field in the game and held Rochester to 34% for the contest. The Yellowjackets were able to stay within striking distance thanks to a 20-24 performance from the free throw line as Bowdoin went 13-18.
  • Ray Cuevas finished an excellent weekend performance with a game-high 17 points and four assists.
  • Mason Dawkins posted a double-double with 12 points, ten rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
  • Kevin Reeves had nine points and nine rebounds, grappling with foul trouble.
