Women's Basketball Wins Double-Overtime Thriller at Bates

LEWISTON, Maine – The Bowdoin College women's basketball prevailed in a double-overtime classic on Thursday evening in Alumni Gymnasium, rallying from a fourth quarter deficit and surviving a half-court buzzer-beater to defeat Bates, 77-70. The Polar Bears move to 5-0 on the season with the win while the Bobcats drop their first game of the season and stand at 6-1.
 
Game Highlights
  • The teams traded blows throughout the opening half, with Bates opening up as many as an eight point lead, 26-18, with 4:30 left in the second quarter.
  • Bowdoin closed the half on a 7-2 run, getting a pair of Jamie Yue free throws to trim the Bobcat lead to 28-25 at the break.
  • The third quarter saw the Bobcats push their lead to the largest of the game, building a nine point advantage, 44-35, in the final minute of the period, but a huge three-pointer from Payton Collins in the closing seconds cut the lead to six, 44-38, heading to the fourth.
  • The Polar Bears cut the lead to a single point on two occasions before finally tying the contest at 52 on a Grace Kinum lay-in with 3:30 to go. After Bates regained a two-point edge, Carly Davey hit a running lay-up with 44 seconds remaining to tie the game at 54 and force overtime.
  • Bowdoin appeared to have the game in hand, up three points in the closing moments of the first overtime session, but a buzzer-beating half-court shot by Sarah Hughes tied the game at 63 and sent the teams to double OT.
  • In double overtime, Bowdoin took command, outscoring Bates 12-4 to open the session. Carly Davey and Abbie Quinn scored six points each in the second OT period to clinch it for the Polar Bears.

  • Grace Kinum was outstanding for Bowdoin, scoring a career-high 26 points, grabbing a career-high ten rebounds and collecting four steals.
  • Carly Davey, who entered the fourth quarter with two points, scored 17 points in the fourth quarter and overtime periods to propel Bowdoin, ending with 19 points, five rebounds, and five assists.
  • Abbie Quinn had 16 points and four boards while Payton Collins chipped in nine points off the bench – all on three-pointers.
  • Both teams shot 39% from the field in the game and had 19 turnovers. Bowdoin owned a key 45-36 edge in rebounding in the contest and held the Bobcats to just one made field goal in the second OT.
  • Bowdoin has won four straight and seven of their last eight meetings with the Bobcats. The teams will play their NESCAC conference game in Brunswick on January 16.
