Second Half Propels Men's Hoops to Road Win at MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Bowdoin College men's basketball team used a big second half to defeat MIT in a non-conference road win Saturday afternoon, 75-68. The Polar Bears move to 5-1 with the win while the Engineers fall to 3-4 on the season. 

Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin struggled from the field in the opening twenty minutes, shooting 31% from the field and going 1-7 from three-point range. 
  • Meanwhile MIT connected on 44% to carry a 34-24 lead into the break. 
  • The Polar Bears wasted little time drawing even, coming out of the break on a 18-8 run, including 11 point from Ray Cuevas, who tied the game at 42 apiece on a jumper with 13:22 to go. 
  • The teams traded buckeys for the next nine minutes, and crossed the five minute mark tied at 60-60. 
  • Alex Halpern delivered a big three-pointer to give Bowdoin a 63-60 lead with 4:31 to go, but MIT rallied to tie the contest at 66 apiece with 3:30 on the clock.
  • Mason Dawkins converted a pair of free throws with 3:08 left to give Bowdoin a 68-66 edge and, after a defensive stop, Halpern hit a floating jumper in the lane to make it 70-66 with 1:43 remaining.  
  • Ben Chilson converted an and-1 and Dawkins capped the game-clinching 9-0 run with a dunk to seal the victory. 
By The Numbers
  • Ray Cuevas finished with a game-high 19 points, which featured 17 in the second half, to go with four boards and three assists. 
  • Mason Dawkins posted 15 points and four assists while Alex Halpern posted a season-high 12. 
  • Kevin Reeves also had 12 with five boards. 
  • Bowdoin shot 61% in the second half and held MIT to 41%, finishing with a 38-35 edge in rebounding and scoring 16 points off 14 Engineer turnovers.
