Fourth Quarter Sinks Polar Bears Against Amherst

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Amherst College football team outscored Bowdoin 21-0 in the fourth quarter of a 34-7 loss at Whittier Field on Saturday. The Polar Bears remain winless at 0-5 while the Mammoths improve to 4-1 on the year.
 
Game Highlights
  • The Polar Bears kept it close for the first half, grabbing an early lead following a Max Oenning interception in Amherst territory. Peter Macauley finished off a short drive with a four-yard run to give Bowdoin a 7-0 edge.
  • Amherst answered immediately, capitalizing on a long kickoff return by Carter Jung to score four plays later on a five-yard rush by Marek Hill to deadlock the score.
  • The Mammoths added a field goal before the halftime break to take a 10-7 lead into intermission.
  • Amherst scored another field goal in the third quarter to extend their lead to 13-7 as Bowdoin stayed within striking distance.
  • The Mammoths forced a three-and-out late in the quarter, however, and struck three times in a span of 9:15 in the fourth period to put the game away, including long TD passes of 62 and 35 yards to clinch the contest.

  • Amherst finished with 508 yards of total offense, with 306 coming in the second half and 211 in the fourth.
  • Marek Hill went 20-32 for 334 yards passing, two touchdowns and 37 yards rushing with a score to lead the Mammoths.
  • Soren Hummel went 10-17 for 61 yards passing as the Polar Bears could only muster 144 yards of total offense on the day.
  • Ty Connolly caught five passes for 30 yards for Bowdoin.
  • Ferris Collins led Bowdoin with eight tackles while Angus Leary had six tackles, 2.5 for loss, a sack, and two QB hurries.
  • Max Oenning had five tackles, an interception, and a pass breakup.
  • Caden Perry had eight punts for an average of 42.3 yards with four landing inside the Amherst 20.
