Women's Basketball Falls to Smith in NCAA Elite Eight

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College women's basketball team saw its season come to an end in a 52-47 loss to Smith in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday night in Morrell Gymnasium.
 
The Polar Bears end a fantastic season with a record of 28-3 and a NESCAC Championship while the Pioneers advance to their second straight Final Four and move to 29-3 on the year.
 
Game Highlights
  • After a back-and-forth opening quarter that saw Smith hold a 16-12 lead, both teams struggled from the field in the second quarter as defense took command of the contest.
  • The teams combined for 14 points in the second period and the Polar Bears were able to grab a little bit of momentum when Megan Tan hit a three-pointer to cut the Smith lead to 23-19 at the break.
  • A 5-0 run out of the gate by Bowdoin briefly regained the lead for the Polar Bears, but for every Bowdoin bucket, Smith was able to respond throughout the second half.
  • A last-second jumper by Carly Davey gave the Polar Bears a one-point lead heading into the fourth quarter and Bowdoin still held a one-point edge, 44-43, after free throws by Abbie Quinn with 4:28 to go.
  • Smith took control from there, using a layup by Sofia Rosa and a three-point play by Jessie Ruffner to take the lead for good with under four minutes to go.
  • The Polar Bears struggled from the field in the fourth quarter, going just 2-10, as Smith was able to hang on for the win.
By The Numbers
  • In her final collegiate game, Megan Tan scored 12 points and had six rebounds for Bowdoin while Carly Davey posted 11 points.
  • Smith was led by 27 points and 13 rebounds from Jessie Ruffner.
  • Smith owned a key 43-36 advantage on the glass, and held Bowdoin to 35% shooting for the contest.
  • The Pioneers shot only 33% for the game but took advantage of 17 second chance points and 32 points in the paint to come away with the win.
