Men's Lacrosse Uses Big First Half Run to Sprint Past Western New England

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College men's lacrosse team broke open a close game with a 9-0 first half run and cruised to a 19-9 victory over Western New England on Wednesday evening at Whittier Field. The Polar Bears, ranked ninth in the latest USILA Division III poll, stand at 2-0 this year while the Golden Bears fall to 2-2 on the season.
 
Game Highlights
  • Tied at 3-3 in the early going, Patrick Fitzgerald deposited a feed from Oliver Bernstein at the 7:13 mark of the first quarter, sparking a nine-goal run that covered 19:27 and gave the hosts the lead for good.
  • Jason Lach and Sam Raye-Steiner scored twice each in the surge, and when Chris Berry put home a feed from Casey Ryan at 2:46 of the second quarter, Bowdoin had built a 12-3 advantage.
  • Up 12-5 at the break, Bowdoin put the contest out of reach with a 5-0 run to start the third quarter as Zack Goorno scored one and assisted on two others in the run that pushed the lead into double digits.
By The Numbers
  • Robert Hobbs made 17 saves and allowed just nine goals in his second straight strong performance to open the campaign for Bowdoin.
  • Will Byrne led the offense with a seven-point night, scoring twice and assisting on five others.
  • Zack Goorno and Matt Ward had two goals and two assists apiece while both Jason Lach and Casey Ryan finished with three goals and a helper.
  • Goorno also had four ground balls and two caused turnovers while Harp Lane added two caused turnovers. Nate Ryan had a caused turnover and three ground balls.
  • Ethan Barnard led the Bowdoin faceoff effort, winning 13 of 18 with a team-best seven ground balls.
