Baseball Opens New Season and New Stadium With Doubleheader Sweep

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin baseball team opened its new era at Pickard Field with a doubleheader sweep of the University of Maine-Farmington on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Polar Bears exploded offensively for a 13-0 victory. Bowdoin cruised to a 5-1 win in the second game. The series was the season opener for both teams, with Bowdoin sitting at 2-0 and UMF sitting at 0-2.
 
Game One Highlights
  • CJ Brito-Trinidad started the Polar Bear scoring off with a two-run triple to right center. Luke Chessie tagged the first homerun in the new stadium with a three-run blast over the left field scoreboard.
  • Brito-Trinidad made it 6-0 in the bottom of the second, sending a long sacrifice fly to center. Will Bordes added his first RBI of the game off a single to left center.
  • Bowdoin scored four more runs in the third, capped by a two-run blast to straightaway center off the bat of Kevin Murray.
  • Cal Thompson had his first collegiate double and plated Liam foley in the fourth. Christian O'Brien rounded out the scoring with an RBI groundout in the fifth.
  • Luca McKerley Coronado went four innings for the Polar Bears and allowed four hits with five strikeouts.
  • Franco Ruocco made his collegiate debut with two innings of work and a pair of K's.
  • Hugh Devine closed out the game with two strikeouts.
 
Game Two Highlights
  • Bowdoin returned to its scoring ways as Chris Dirks singled up the middle for an RBI in the first.
  • Murray added a two-run double to left in the bottom of the second to make it 3-0.
  • Ben McKenzie plated one run with a double down the left field line in the fourth.
  • Murray made it a five RBI day, adding a sacrifice fly to right in the fourth that plated McKenzie.
  • UMF spoiled the shutout day for Bowdoin with one run scored in the top of the seventh.
  • Rudy Gately pitched six complete shutout innings, fanning four batters. The first-year allowed three hits.
