NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament Begins Friday at Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin College will host an NCAA Division III First & Second Round Regional in Morrell Gymnasium on Friday and Saturday, March 1-2. Complete regional information is available below.

A limited number of tickets will be available at the door on Friday, with the doors scheduled to be open at 3:00 p.m. The NCAA-mandated ticket price is $15 for adults, $10 for children and seniors. Bowdoin students are free w/ID. Tickets can also be purchased online. Team Previews

Bowdoin returned to the mountaintop of NESCAC basketball this winter, claiming its tenth conference title - the most in league history - and first since 2020. A perennial NCAA participant, Bowdoin will be making its 21st tournament appearance, the 14th most all-time in Division III history..the Polar Bears have advanced to the Final Four on three occasions, finishing as runners-up all three times ('04, '18, '19)...second year head coach Megan Phelps and assistant Abby Kelly were named the NESCAC Coaching Staff of the Year after a first-place finish in the league standings and conference crown...Phelps was a player for Bowdoin from 2011-15, and assistant coach from 2017-20, while Kelly played for Bowdoin from 2015-19...junior guard Sydney Jones was named the NESCAC Women's Basketball Player of the Year after a stellar season that saw her rank among the league leaders in points (16.4), rebounds (7.0), assists (3.5) and steals (2.0)...she is the sixth Bowdoin player to be honored as such, joining Lora Trenkle (2002 & 2004), Eileen Flaherty (2007), Shannon Brady (2016), Kate Kerrigan (2018), and Kelly (2019)...Bowdoin is 25-2 all-time in Morrell Gymnasium in NCAA Tournament play. 
 

Western New England University Golden Bears (22-5)
Western New England enters NCAA's with a 22-5 record overall, 13-3 in Commonwealth Coast Conference play...the 22 wins are a program record, with a previous high of 21 coming in both 2019–2020 and 2005–2006... currently riding a seven-game win streak coming into NCAA Tournament play, WNE last won the Commonwealth Coast Conference in 2018–2019...the Golden Bears are led by their defense as their field goal defense and scoring defense were tops in the CCC...offensively, Western New England has picked up production from junior Shaina Cooney, who averaged just under 12 points per game while grabbing 7.2 rebounds per game....Tara Laugeni recorded her 1,000th collegiate point in a December 2 win over UNE... Western New England ranks in the top echelon in the country in assist/turnover ratio (1.22, 15th), assists per game (17.8, 15th), rebound margin (9.7, 17th), and bench scoring per game (29.1 ppg, 20th)...Head Coach Nicole Chaszar is in her 19th season with the program and has recorded 295 wins at the helm...this is the third time in program history that WNE has made the NCAA Tournament (2019, 2020, 2024). WNE is 0-2 in the NCAA Tournament all time. 
 

UMass Dartmouth LogoUMass Dartmouth Corsairs (23-4)
With 22 wins, UMass Dartmouth tied the school record for best regular season in program history... it is the second tournament appearance all-time for the Corsairs, who advanced to the Elite 8 in 2017... of the team's four losses this season, three of them came to third-ranked Rhode Island College, including in last weekend's Little East Conference title game...  Carly Whiteside was named All-LEC First Team while Teja Andrews named All-LEC Second Team and All-Defensive Team... Andrews enters NCAA Tournament play 54 points away from 1,000 career... Kaylin Zalewski scored a career-high 30 points in the Little East Conference Semifinal against Southern Maine... Matthew Ducharme '00 is in his tenth season as the head coach of the program...he has led the Corsairs to the postseason in each of his ten seasons. 


 

New Jersey CityNew Jersey City University Gothic Knights (19-8)
NJCU went 0-21 in 2017-18 (the year before Pat Devaney took over), had never been to NCAAs and only made the NJAC Tournament once (1988-89)...since he took charge in 2018-19, the team has amassed a 76-66 overall record. They have won three NJAC Championships in the past four seasons (2021, 2022, 2024) and the first regular-season championship in program history (2023)...NJCU's NCAA bid in 2022 was the first in program history – this year is the second...Damaris Rodriguez has a long list of accolades, including two-time All-American, three-time preseason All-American, two-time NJAC Player of the Year...Dayjah Anderson is a three-time All-NJAC selection, she returned to the roster for her final season after sitting out the past two.
