Men's Hoops Ends Season on High Note With Road Victory at Amherst

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College men's basketball team concluded its season with its first win over Amherst since 2010, walking away with a 65-61 win over the Mammoths on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Polar Bears finish their season with a record of 9-15 (3-7 NESCAC) and finish in a tie for ninth place in the conference, just missing out on the conference playoffs.
 
Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin shot 43% from the field in the opening half and finished the half on an 11-4 run, keyed by four points from Michael Simonds, to take a 36-31 lead at intermission.
  • The teams traded the lead in the early minutes of the second half, but a Michael Simonds three-pointer with 15:16 to go gave the Polar Bears a 41-40 and they would never relinquish it.
  • Bowdoin's lead bounced between one and five points for the entirety of the second half, with Amherst closing to within one point for the final time, 58-57, with 3:27 to go.
  • Bowdoin answered with a lay-up by Kevin Reeves and got a clutch bucket from Afamdi Achufusi with 28 seconds remaining to keep the Mammoths at bay, holding onto the win.
By The Numbers
  • Bowdoin was led by 21 points from Michael Simonds, who also had six rebounds and two steals in his final collegiate contest.
  • Ben Chilson capped a solid rookie campaign with a 14-point, eight-rebound effort while Afamdi Achufusi scored 11 points for the Polar Bears.
  • Bowdoin shot 42% from the field, compared to 43% for Amherst, but went 10-12 from the line in the win as the Mammoths connected on just 9-17 from the stripe.
  • The Polar Bears finished their season on a high note, winning three of their final four games against NESCAC opponents and defeating the Mammoths for the first time since a 69-68 win in January of 2010 and picking up their first win in Amherst since a victory in the NESCAC semifinals in March of 2008.
