Defense Propels Men's Basketball To Win in Home Opener

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College men's basketball team used an outstanding defensive performance in the first half and held off a late rally to defeat Maine-Presque Isle on Wednesday evening in Morrell Gymnasium, 65-53.

The Polar Bears improve to 3-0 for the first time since 2017 while the Owls fall to 3-2 on the season.

Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin's defense was the story in the first half as the Polar Bears held the Owls to 13% shooting and nine turnovers and just 17 points.
  • The Polar Bears never trailed, but UMPI stayed within striking distance until three-pointers from Jaden Hill and Ray Cuevas bookended a 15-2 Bowdoin run that pushed the lead to 26-9 midway through the frame.
  • Bowdoin held a 34-17 edge at the break, and pushed the lead to as many as 25 points, 51-26, with 11:48 remaining.
  • The Owls mounted a huge comeback, going on a 23-4 run to cut the lead to 55-49 with 5:30 to go.
  • A jumper by James McGowan steadied the Polar Bears, however, and Bowdoin was able to push the lead back to double figures where it stayed for the rest of the contest.
