Volleyball Posts Weekend Sweep After Five Set Win Over Trinity

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin volleyball team celebrated a senior weekend NESCAC sweep after finishing off Trinity in a five-setter on Saturday afternoon. The Polar Bears conclude the regular season with a 13-8 overall record and a 5-5 conference record. The Bantams are 19-5 (5-5 NESCAC). Bowdoin earned the win going 25-20, 22-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-12.
 
Match Highlights
  • After starting the match with back-and-forth play and a 5-5 score, Bowdoin went on a 6-0 run to create some space. Trinity pulled within two at 19-17, but could not close the gap as Bowdoin posted a 25-20 win.
  • Trinity trailed early in the second but tied the game at 13-13 and again at 18-18. The Bantams pulled ahead by as much as four before the Polar Bears rattled off three straight points to make it a one-point match at 23-22 in favor of Trinity. The Bantams scored two more to take the set.
  • The third set started tight until Trinity went on a 6-0 run to take a 13-9 lead and never trailed again.
  • The evenly matched play continued in the fourth as neither team could string together more than three consecutive points. With the game tied a 22-22, Haley Campau recorded a kill to give Bowdoin the edge and serve. Campau then took over on serve and put down an ace to set up set point. Mary John came up with a kill to send the match to a fifth.
  • Bowdoin never trailed in the deciding set. An attacking error allowed Trinity to make it 10-10, but the Polar Bears went up by two off Skye LaMendola's kill and a Bantams error.
  • Cameron Shelly set up match point with an ace only to have the Bantams hang around for another point. Kaila Dowd served into the net give the Polar Bears their final point.
 
By the Numbers
  • LaMendola was the match-leader in kills with 20. Haley Campau was second on the team with 16.
  • Shelly put down four aces in the match and dished out 26 assists.
  • Campau posted four blocks, followed by Mary John with three.

  • The Polar Bears earned the seventh seed for the NESCAC Tournament following a three-way tie with Trinity and Williams with 5-5 conference records. Bowdoin travels to second-seeded Middlebury on November 9 at 3:00 p.m.
