Penalty Shootout Dooms Field Hockey After Taking Tufts Through Double Overtime

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Bowdoin field hockey team played a full regulation game and two overtime periods but ultimately fell in a shootout at Tufts on Tuesday evening.
 
The Polar Bears conclude the regular season with a 6-9 (3-7 NESCAC) record. The Jumbos are a top-four team in the conference with a 13-2 (8-2 NESCAC) record.
 
Game Highlights
  • Tufts got on the board in the 11th minute, converting on its first penalty corner of the game. Kylie Rosenquest received a pass from the top of the circle and dished slightly left to Andrea Delgiudice who sent a slap shot style ball past Lauren O'Donald.
  • Bowdoin found its offensive voice in the second quarter after earning a pair of penalty corners. Clara Noyes swept a ball from the top of the circle toward Maya Malenfant. Malenfant redirected a shot to the left post where Caroline Higgins waited to tip it in for an equalizer.
  • The Jumbos regained the lead with under two minutes remaining in the third quarter. Reagan Malo received a feed on the stroke line and spun and shot to make it 2-1.
  • Emily Ferguson tied the game in the 50th minute with a successful penalty stroke.
  • The teams traded chances in overtime and Tufts looked to score in the second overtime but saw the goal waved off.
  • The game came down to a shootout and three saves by Lydia Eastburn was too much for the Polar Bears to overcome.

  • Lauren O'Donald made a career-high 21 saves through 80 minutes of play.
  • The Polar Bears were outshot 39-7 and 23-3 in shots on goal.
  • The Jumbos lined up 15 penalty corners, including four in overtime.
