Men's Soccer Cruises to Season-Opening Win Over UNE

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The sixth-ranked Bowdoin College men's soccer team scored three goals in the first 14:34 to cruise to a season-opening 5-1 win over the University of New England on Tuesday evening in the first night home game in the history of the program. The Polar Bears move to 1-0-0 with the win while the Nor'easters fall to 0-2-1 this year.

Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin's Felipe Rueda Duran scored four goals for the Polar Bears, one shy of the school record, and finished with nine points in the contest, also one shy of the program mark, both set by Bob Shultz against Maine Maritime in 1989.
  • Tyler Huck got Bowdoin on the scoreboard at the 2:35 mark, working a give-and-go with Rueda Duran and burying the game's first goal.
  • Just over a minute later, Carlton Steinberg made a long run down the wing and forced a corner kick for Bowdoin. A great individual effort off the corner by Rueda Duran made it 2-0 Polar Bears.
  • Huck fed Rueda Duran for his second goal at the 14:34 mark, pushing Bowdoin's advantage to three goals, before a late strike by UNE's Gavin Mason at 33:49 trimmed the lead to 3-1 at intermission.
  • Huck found Rueda Duran again at 55:52 to make it 4-1 and Rueda Duran closed out the scoring with a rebound off a penalty shot at 61:31 to close out the scoring.
By The Numbers
  • Bowdoin held a 20-2 advantage in shots and 4-1 edge in corner kicks in the game.
  • Huck's three assists were one short of the school record set by Matty McColl against UNE in 2018.
  • Other than Bob Shultz's five goal game against Maine Maritime in 1989, the only other four-goal game in program history came from Girma Asmerom against Bates in 1971.
  • The Polar Bears improved to 25-0 all time against UNE with the win, dating back to 1990.
Up Next
  • The Polar Bears will return to action on Friday night when they host Bates at 7:00 p.m. at Pickard Field.
