Men's Ice Hockey Wins NESCAC Championship in Overtime and Earns NCAA Bid

AMHERST, Mass. - The Bowdoin College men's hockey team captured its first conference title since 2014, completing an impressive run through the NESCAC Tournament with a 3-2 overtime win over Williams on Sunday at Amherst College. It is the third NESCAC Championship for Bowdoin (2013, '14) and completes an improbable run to the conference crown for the Polar Bears, who become the first seventh seed to win the league title in history.

Bowdoin, who receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, will learn its next opponent at 10:00 a.m. Monday morning during the NCAA Division III Men's Hockey Selection Show.

Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 14 seconds into the NESCAC Championship. Bowdoin won the faceoff and sent the puck into Williams territory. Patrick Callahan found the puck behind the net and fed Andy Stoneman in the slot for a one-timer.
  • The Ephs answered four minutes later on a play set up by Owen Stadheim. Stadheim circled around the back of the net from left to right and slipped a flat pass to Mac Carso in the middle of the crease.
  • Williams took the lead at 11:54 off a right post deflection by Stadheim.
  • Stoneman wasted no time before finding the back of the net again, to tie the game, 14 seconds later. Jack Gilligan fired a shot from the right point and Callahan put the rebound back on pads. Stoneman collected the puck off Callahan's shot and finished off the play.
  • After a combined four goals in the first period, neither team could find the net in the final 40 minutes of regulation. Tied 2-2, the game went into overtime.
  • Bobby Pearl came up with the game-winner 3:56 into overtime. Albert Washco passed the puck to Pearl on the left side and Pearl skated into the faceoff circle before firing. The wrister found the net and Bowdoin captured its third NESCAC title.

By the Numbers
  • Both teams went 0-for-1 on the power play.
  • Alex Kozic made 35 saves in net for the Polar Bears.
