Men's Basketball Uses Late Surge To Capture Big Road Win at Bates

LEWISTON, Maine – The Bowdoin College men's basketball ended the game on a 14-6 run to capture a big 68-63 NESCAC road win at Bates on Friday night. The Polar Bears move to 10-11 (2-5 NESCAC) with the victory while the Bobcats fall to 7-14 (1-6 NESCAC).
 
Game Highlights
  • In one of the tightest played games of the season, neither team led by more than six at any point during the contest.
  • Bowdoin owned a 34-31 lead at the break thanks to ten first-half points from Xander Werkman and eight from Michael Simonds.
  • A dunk by Kevin Reeves before the first half buzzer gave the Polar Bears a three-point edge at the break.
  • The Polar Bears led throughout most of the second half until a jumper by Stephen Baxter gave the hosts a 53-52 lead with under five minutes to go.
  • The teams traded buckets for the next two minutes before four straight free throws by Xander Werkman lifted Bowdoin from down three points (54-57) to up one, 58-57, with 2:40 to go.
  • Bowdoin maintained their one-point lead with under a minute to go and Werkman delivered again, hitting a jumper in the paint and grabbing a defensive rebound after a Bates miss on the other end to help secure the victory.

  • Bowdoin outscored Bates 14-6 over the final 3:08 to earn the comeback victory.
  • The Polar Bears finished at 35% shooting for the game, but held Bates to 32% and owned a 49-44 edge on the glass.
  • Bowdoin cashed in 14 second chance points and ten points off turnovers in the victory.
  • Xander Werkman was outstanding, leading all players with 23 points and ten rebounds.
  • Michael Simonds added 13 while Andrew Szwez grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.
  • Jaden Hill pitched in nine big points off the bench.
