Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Brown's OT Game-Winner Propels Men's Hockey to NESCAC Quarterfinal Win

HARTFORD, Conn. – Chris Brown scored the overtime game-winner to give the seventh-seeded Bowdoin men's ice hockey team an upset victory over second-seeded Trinity, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon, marking the program's first NESCAC postseason win since 2014.

The Polar Bears (13-9-3) trailed 1-0 late into the third period but scored a late equalizer to force overtime. The Bantams (16-8-1) held a 10-0-1 record against Bowdoin dating back to January 2017.

Game Highlights
  • Alex Kozic came up with multiple key saves to keep the Bantams off the board through the first 20 minutes. Kozic denied 19 shots to send the teams into the first intermission tied 0-0.
  • Six minutes into the second, Christian Hayes carried the puck from the left boards towards net and backhanded a shot from just outside the crease that Kozic denied.
  • Just 30 seconds later, the Bantams finally broke through. Following a pile-up in the crease, the puck was kicked out and around to Riley Prattson who buried a shot from the left side at mid-range.
  • With 4:30 remaining in regulation, the Polar Bears found an equalizer. After a Kozic save, Jesse Lycan sent a long breakout pass to Gabe Shipper waiting at Trinity's blue line. Shipper broke behind the defense and carried the puck to the left post before putting it through Devon Bobak's pads.
  • The final minutes saw multiple promising chances for the Polar Bears as the teams skated four-on-four. Shipper and Ean Small peppered the net with shots, as did Ethan Kimball and Cam Berube.
  • The Polar Bears maintained their momentum going into the first overtime period and came away with the win. Berube recovered a Trinity pass and handled between the circles, drawing the goalie. Berube fed Chris Brown on the right post for a one-timer past Bobak for the winner.

By the Numbers
  • Kozic made a season-high 46 saves to earn the win in net for Bowdoin.
  • Bobak made 30 stops for Trinity.
  • Bowdoin went 0-for-2 on the power play.
  • The win was Bowdoin's first postseason win since the 2014 NESCAC Championship game victory over Amherst.
