Women's Hoops Can't Rally in NESCAC Quarterfinal Loss at Tufts

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Bowdoin College women's basketball team couldn't mount a fourth-quarter rally, losing a hard-fought NESCAC Quarterfinal to Tufts on Saturday, 75-61. The eighth-seeded Polar Bears finish their season with a record of 15-10 while the top-seeded Jumbos (19-6) will host the NESCAC Semifinals and Championship next weekend.

Game Highlights
  • Sparked by four points each from Sela Kay and Sydney Jones in the early going, Bowdoin jumped to 10-4 lead out of the gate.
  • Bowdoin maintained the lead, shooting 47% from the field and got a late bucket from Kay to take a 17-14 advantage into the second quarter.
  • The Polar Bears went cold in the second quarter, however, as the Jumbos held Bowdoin to just three field goals and opened the frame on an 11-2 run to take the lead. Tufts carried a slim 28-26 edge at halftime.
  • Both teams picked up the pace offensively in a high-scoring third quarter, but the hosts were especially efficient as Tufts went 10-11 from the field and 7-8 from the free throw line to score 29 points and extend their lead to 57-48 entering the fourth.
  • Bowdoin got as close as seven points in the fourth quarter, following a layup from Rachel Story with 3:27 to go. The Polar Bears could get no closer, though, as Tufts went 10-10 from the line down the stretch to put the game away.
By The Numbers
  • Tufts was paced by 40 points from Maggie Russell in the win, as she went 11-17 from the field and 16-16 from the free throw line.
  • The Jumbos shot 49% from the field and held Bowdoin to 37% for the game.
  • Sydney Jones scored 16 points and had nine rebounds to lead the Polar Bears while Sela Kay finished with ten points in her final game as at Bowdoin.
  • Annie Boasberg had eight points and six boards in her final contest while Carly Davey had ten points for the Polar Bears.
  • Bowdoin owned a 35-33 edge on the glass but connected on just 5-23 from three point range in the loss.
