Men's Basketball Uses Late Surge To Down Carnegie Mellon

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Bowdoin College men's basketball team won a nailbiter on day two of the UAA/New England Challenge at Middlebury on Sunday, defeating Carnegie Mellon 66-62. The Polar Bears improve to 4-5 while CMU falls to 7-2 this season.
 
Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin opened up a seven-point edge at the break, scoring the final six points before halftime on buckets from Jaden Hill, Andrew Szwez, and Ben Chilson to take a 36-29 lead.
  • The second half was tight throughout, as Bowdoin opened up as many as an eight-point lead before Carnegie Mellon rallied to take a brief 47-45 lead at the 11-minute mark.
  • Sparked by a three-pointer from Michael Simonds, Bowdoin used a 7-0 surge to regain a five-point lead, but couldn't put CMU away.
  • Bowdoin never surrendered the lead, despite Carnegie Mellon cutting the lead to a single point on four occasions, the last coming with 2:46 to go.
  • After a pair of defensive stops by Bowdoin, a big driving layup by Alex Halpern with 1:10 remaining made it a two-possession game and Bowdoin put the contest away with several late free throws, stretching it to seven before a buzzer-beating three-pointer by CMU cut the final edge to four points.

  • Ben Chilson had 12 points and five boards while Michael Simonds had ten points on 3-4 shooting from three-point range.

  • The Polar Bears cashed in for 19 points off 14 turnovers in the win.
