Volleyball Needs Five Sets to Hold Off Hamilton in Key NESCAC Win

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College volleyball team rallied to take a five-set thriller over Hamilton College on Friday evening in Morrell Gymnasium. The 3-2 win improves the Polar Bears to 8-4 (3-3 NESCAC) while the Continentals drop to 6-6 (2-3 NESCAC).
 
Match Highlights
  • The Polar Bears won by set scores of 25-16, 16-25, 25-18, 16-25, 15-12.
  • Bowdoin took the first set of the back and forth match by claiming seven of the last eight points in the opener to win 25-16.
  • Hamilton rebounded in the second set, jumping to a 5-1 lead and never trailing to even the match at one set apiece.
  • After trailing in the third, Bowdoin used a late 6-1 run to clinch the third set and take a 2-1 overall lead.
  • Again the Continentals answered, taking control in the fourth set with a 7-2 run midway through the frame to force a decisive fifth.
  • In the fifth set, the teams traded points in the early going and were tied at 11 apiece late in the set.
  • A kill by Lily Janas gave Bowdoin the lead for good, and sparked a match-ending 4-1 surge, capped by a Skye LaMendola kill to give Bowdoin a 15-12 win.
By The Numbers
  • Ella Haugen was fantastic, dishing out 48 assists, collecting 11 digs, four kills and two service aces. With the assist total, she surpassed 2,500 (2,521) for her career, becoming just the sixth Polar Bear in school history to reach the plateau.
  • Skye LaMendola had 20 kills and 16 digs while Lily Janas pitched in ten kills.
  • Defensively, Mary John had three blocks and Maya White led all players with 24 digs.
