Fourth Quarter Rally Comes Up Just Short in Football Loss at Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan University football team scored 35 unanswered points and held off a late rally by Bowdoin in a 35-30 win on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals move to 4-2 on the season while the Polar Bears fall to 3-3.
 
Game Highlights
  • After the teams traded early possessions, Bowdoin struck first on a 27-yard strike from Andrew Boel to Slade Postemski midway through the opening quarter.
  • Bowdoin was poised to extend its lead to 14-0, marching deep into Cardinals territory late in the second quarter, but a fumble by Boel was recovered and returned 59 yards by Jake Edwards to tie the game at 7-7.
  • On the very next possession, Bowdoin moved the ball into Wesleyan territory again, but a 55-yard interception return for a touchdown by Kade Doverspike gave the hosts at 14-7 edge.
  • Wesleyan extended its lead to 21-7 on the last play before the half as Niko Candido found Chase Wilson from 27 yards out, stunning the Polar Bears right before the break.
  • Two more touchdowns by Wesleyan in the third quarter seemingly put the game out of reach at 35-7, but Bowdoin mounted a furious fourth quarter comeback.
  • Koy Price got it started with a safety with 12:10 to go and Boel found Brendan King for three touchdowns, including a nine-yard strike that cut the lead to 35-30 with 52 seconds left.
  • The ensuing onside kickoff was unsuccessful and the Cardinals were able to hang on to the victory.

  • Bowdoin's defense allowed just 254 yards on the day, and 21 points, including just 38 yards rushing.
  • Nick Viscusi led Bowdoin with seven tackles while Aidan Reidy had 1.5 sacks on the day.
  • Bowdoin's offense racked up 542 yards, including Boel went 31-51 for 431 yards and four touchdowns.
  • Colton Fahey caught eight passes for 144 yards while Brendan King ended with seven catches for 90 yards and tied the school record with three touchdown receptions.
  • Bowdoin had an astounding 39:59 time of possession in the loss.
