Men's Lacrosse Continues Record-Breaking Campaign With First NCAA Quarterfinal Trip

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College men's lacrosse team is headed to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the first time in program history following a 17-12 win over St. Lawrence on Sunday afternoon at Whittier Field.
 
The ninth-ranked Polar Bears (18-2) continue their historic season by finishing a perfect 8-0 at Whittier Field, and advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals next weekend against RIT in Rochester, N.Y. Game time and ticket information will be announced on Monday.
 
Game Highlights
  • The teams traded blows in the early going, exchanging goals until midway through the opening half, tied 3-3.
  • Bowdoin took command with a key 6-0 run, spanning the end of the first and beginning of second quarters.
  • Chris Fowler and Zach Chandler got the Polar Bears going with goals 37 seconds apart before Patrick Fitzgerald and Will Byrne pushed the lead to 7-3 at the end of the first.
  • Oliver Bernstein and Jason Lach continued the run to start the second period as the Polar Bear defense blanked the Saints for over 14 minutes.
  • The Polar Bears owned a 10-4 lead at the break and continued to roll to begin the second half, pushing the lead to as many as eight goals, 14-6, before a 5-0 St. Lawrence surge, capped by consecutive goals from Jack Hennessey, closed the gap to 14-11 with 11:29 to go.
  • Will Byrne steadied the Polar Bear ship, however, scoring two huge goals in the fourth quarter to regain some cushion and put the game away.
By The Numbers
  • A balanced Bowdoin attack was the key to victory on Sunday as contributions came from all over the field, with four players notching hat tricks.
  • Patrick Fitzgerald had three goals and two assists while Will Byrne, Oliver Bernstein and Zach Chandler all had three scores and an assist. Chris Fowler and Jason Lach added two goals each.
  • Ethan Barnard was outstanding on the faceoff dot, winning 21-31 on the afternoon, including 12-16 in the first half.
  • Robert Hobbs made 15 saves in front of a stellar Bowdoin defensive unit that was able to hold St. Lawrence to 1-5 on extra-man opportunities.
  • Judge Murphy had four goals and William Helm made 13 saves in the loss for St. Lawrence.

  • Bowdoin will play in the NCAA Quarterfinals at RIT next Saturday at noon with the other game in the regional being Tufts and Salisbury. Saturday's winners will play Sunday for a trip to the NCAA Division III Championship game.
