AMHERST, Mass. – The Bowdoin College women's lacrosse team grabbed an early lead and held off a second-half rally to pick up a huge NESCAC win at Amherst on Saturday afternoon, 11-9. The 16
th-ranked Polar Bears improve to 7-3 (2-3 NESCAC) while the 19
th-ranked Mammoths fall to 6-2 (1-2 NESCAC).
Game Highlights
- In a relatively low-scoring first half, Bowdoin never trailed, grabbing a 2-1 lead after one quarter thanks to goals from Sophia Sudano and Sophia Schaefer.
- The Polar Bears extended their lead with an impressive second period, as Sudano scored twice more, giving Bowdoin a 6-3 edge at the break.
- Amherst climbed back into the contest with a 4-1 run to open the third quarter, drawing even with 16 seconds left in the frame, 7-7.
- Bowdoin answered quickly, though, as Sophia Schaefer scored with just two seconds left in the frame to give the Polar Bears an 8-7 edge heading to the fourth.
- The teams traded goals to start the fourth quarter, with Amherst drawing to within 9-8 with 3:36 on the clock.
- Bowdoin sealed it with a pair of late draw control wins and clutch late-game goals by Colleen McAloon at 2:20 and Fiona Bundy with 45 seconds left to clinch the victory.
